India’s Ashish Yadav won a silver medal in the men’s javelin throw event at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships. Yadav threw 74.09 metres in his third attempt and opened the competition for India. With this performance, he became the second Indian after Neeraj Chopra to win a medal in the event.
Won silver with 74.09 metres throw
The 19-year-old Ashish Yadav threw a brilliant 74.09 metres in the third round of the competition, which was enough to win him a silver medal. He was just 40 cm short of his personal best of 74.49 metres. He had achieved this record during the Indian Open Throwing Competition held in Patiala in March this year.
South Africa’s Jan Hendrik Hemmens won the gold medal with a throw of 80.50 metres, while Dominica’s Addison James won the bronze medal with a throw of 73.89 metres. India’s T. Dharanidharan finished sixth with a performance of 72.35 metres.
Becomes second Indian after Neeraj Chopra
Ashish’s achievement has earned him a special place in the history of Indian athletics. He is the second Indian to win a medal in the men’s javelin throw event at the World Under-20 Championships after Neeraj Chopra. Neeraj Chopra had won the gold medal with a throw of 86.48 metres at the World Junior Championships held in Poland in 2016. The world junior record he set still stands today.
Mohammad Ashfaq finishes eighth in 400m
In the men’s 400m event, India’s Mohammad Ashfaq finished eighth in the final with a timing of 46.20 seconds. A day earlier, he had broken the national record for U-20s in the first round of heats. America’s Jaden Delon won the gold medal with a timing of 44.47 seconds, while his compatriot Kinsey Wilson won the silver medal by finishing the race in a timing of 44.62 seconds. South Africa’s Leander K won the bronze medal.
Pooja Singh makes it to the high jump final
National senior record holder Pooja Singh made it to the final of the women’s high jump. She cleared the qualification height of 1.79 meters. Athletes from both the qualification groups who jumped 1.79 metres or more qualified for the finals.
India also got success in the long jump
India’s Shahnawaz Khan and Jitan Arjun also made it to the finals in the men’s long jump. Shahnawaz finished fifth overall in the qualification group A with a jump of 7.79 metres. While Jitin Arjun finished 12th overall with a jump of 7.57 metres. However, India’s Poonam could not make it to the finals in the women’s javelin throw event. She finished eighth in her qualification group and 13th overall.
