Drug-Free Punjab: Narinder Kaur Bharaj

With the aim of further strengthening the “War on Drugs” campaign being run by the Punjab Government to eradicate drugs, MLA Sangrur Narinder Kaur Bharaj today held a review meeting at Shri Kala Mata Mandir Hall with village Sarpanches, Panches, representatives of level defense committees, campaign coordinators and leaders of various sections of society.

On this occasion, the constituency MLA Mrs. Narinder Kaur Bharaj said that a helpline number was issued for the eradication of drugs and e-rickshaws have been run for villages and cities to create awareness against drugs and to receive complaints from people. Under this, 155 complaints were received in Sangrur and out of these, action has been taken against 22 people after investigation. The Punjab government has also provided treatment to about 90 thousand people who were drug addicts. Legal action has been taken against about 60 thousand drug smugglers.

The constituency MLA said that Punjab has always had a history of fighting against bad symptoms and moving forward after defeating bad symptoms. Even now, Punjab will make maximum progress by uprooting the drug menace. He said that the campaign against drugs is getting continuous support from the people. Be it the helpline number or complaints given through awareness e-rickshaws, people are continuously active for the eradication of drugs.

During the meeting, MLA Narinder Kaur Bharaj while reviewing the activities being taken against drugs said that the Punjab government is taking strict action against drug smugglers and anti-social elements under the leadership of Chief Minister Mr. Bhagwant Singh Mann. He said that it is the joint responsibility of the society to break the supply chain of drugs as well as eliminate the demand for drugs.

Mrs. Bharaj said that under the “War on Drugs” campaign, strict legal action is being taken against a large number of drug traffickers and effective action is also being taken against the illegal assets created through drug trade. He said that no one involved in drug trade is being spared.

The MLA said that drugs affect not only an individual but the entire family and society. Therefore, the elected representatives of the villages, youth, social organizations and defense committees should work in coordination and intensify the public awareness campaign against drugs.

He appealed to the sarpanches and panches of the villages to make special efforts to connect the youth with sports, education, employment and other constructive activities. He said that if any information is received regarding the sale or trafficking of drugs in any area, it should be shared immediately with the police and administration so that strict action can be taken against the culprits.

Narinder Kaur Bharaj said that instead of keeping drug addicts away from the society, it is the need of the hour to provide support for their treatment and rehabilitation. The Punjab government is providing all possible help to the affected people through drug de-addiction and rehabilitation centers.

She said that the creation of a drug-free Punjab is not possible only with the efforts of the government, but for this, active cooperation of every section of the society is required. Every citizen should play his role in this social war so that the coming generations can be saved from the scourge of drugs.

During the meeting, the attendees shared information about the efforts being made against drugs in their respective areas and also gave suggestions to make the campaign more effective.

On this occasion, SDM Sangrur Mr. Satish Chandra, SDM Bhawanigarh Mrs. Manjit Kaur along with officers of various departments, village sarpanchs, panchs, members of defense committees, social leaders and dignitaries were present.
