What are the benefits of waste remediation?
Waste remediation is the scientific process of segregating and processing old waste for safe disposal. It significantly reduces foul odour and air pollution originating from the dump site. It also minimizes spontaneous fires in the waste and the smoke they generate, thereby reducing health risks for nearby residents. During remediation, materials such as plastic, metal, soil, and other reusable components are separated and sent for recycling or safe disposal. This process frees up valuable land that can later be utilized for public amenities or other development projects. It also helps prevent soil and groundwater contamination. Thus, remediation not only strengthens solid waste management and cleanliness efforts but also plays an important role in environmental conservation and public health.
Future Remediation Plan
To completely eliminate the remaining legacy waste, a new tender with a capacity of 1 lakh tonnes has also been issued. Under this project, 2,500 tonnes of waste have already been remediated, while the remaining work is planned to be completed over the next two to three months.
Residents said that earlier the dump site emitted a constant foul smell, and frequent fires in the waste generated thick smoke that spread to nearby localities. This caused breathing difficulties, pollution, and several health-related problems. With the remediation work progressing steadily, these issues have reduced considerably, and residents have expressed satisfaction with the improvements.
The Municipal Corporation believes that this project is not merely about waste disposal but is a significant step towards making the city cleaner, healthier, and environmentally sustainable. The administration is confident that once the remaining work is completed in the coming months, the dump site will be completely transformed.
Present on the occasion were Mayor Kundan Gogia, Municipal Commissioner Pooja Syal Grewal, and Sanitary Inspector Harvinder Singh.
