Jalandhar: Monsoon has become active once again in Punjab. Heavy rain was recorded in Amritsar and Gurdaspur on Sunday morning, while afternoon showers in Jalandhar gave relief to the people from the heat and humidity. Due to the rain, water accumulated on the roads of many areas, which affected traffic and caused difficulties for motorists.
The Meteorological Department has issued an alert in 16 districts of Punjab in view of the possibility of rain and thunderstorm. According to the department, moderate to heavy rain is likely in many areas during the next 24 hours. Cloud cover and strong winds are expected, especially in the border and Doaba regions.
In Amritsar and Gurdaspur, clouds had settled since morning and intermittent rain continued for several hours. This brought down the temperature and gave people relief from the long-lasting humid heat. In Jalandhar too, rain in the afternoon flooded markets and residential areas, although the rain made the weather pleasant.
Meanwhile, the water level of Sukhna Lake located in Chandigarh is continuously rising. Due to the rainfall in the hilly areas and water coming from the catchment area, the inflow of water into the lake has increased. The administration has issued a precautionary advisory for residents and tourists living near the lake. People have been appealed not to go too close to the banks of the lake and to keep special supervision over children.
Meteorologists say that this monsoon activity can prove beneficial for agriculture. This rain is considered beneficial for the rice crop, although there may be waterlogging in low-lying areas. The administration has advised people to keep an eye on the latest weather information and to step out of their homes only when necessary.
