The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a major weather forecast predicting a significant shift across Punjab as heavy monsoon rains arrive to break the intense heat and humidity from today through July 22, 2026. While most parts of the state will remain muggy today under a ‘Yellow Alert’—with targeted thunderstorms expected in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, and Hoshiarpur—the weather will intensify sharply over the weekend on July 20 and 21.
The IMD has upgraded this period to an ‘Orange Alert’ for Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Rupnagar, and the broader Majha, Doaba, and East Malwa regions, warning residents of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by severe thunder and lightning. The monsoon system is projected to ease by July 22, lingering only in North and East Punjab while clearing up in the South-West, prompting weather officials to advise farmers and low-lying urban residents to take immediate precautions against localized waterlogging.
