Punjab Agricultural University’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur, organized a specialized conference for Gram Panchayat representatives as part of the ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ campaign at KVK Sangrur.
Held under the leadership of Dr Mandeep Singh, Incharge, PAU-KVK Sangrur, the event aimed to sensitize elected village representatives and progressive farmers on sustainable soil health management and modern, cost-effective farming practices.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Mandeep Singh highlighted the objectives of Khet Bachao Abhiyan and its role in promoting scientific nutrient management. He urged farmers to apply fertilizers based on soil test reports and adopt integrated use of chemical and organic manures to maintain long-term soil fertility.
Dr Rukinderpreet Singh, Assistant Professor, Crop Production, stressed the importance of soil and water testing. He demonstrated scientific methods for collecting soil and irrigation water samples, and advised farmers to apply phosphorus fertilizers in paddy strictly as per soil test recommendations to reduce input costs without affecting yield.
Dr Sunil Kumar, Assistant Professor, FMPE, emphasized in-situ crop residue management for improving soil health and protecting the environment. KVK expert Dr Ravinder Kaur provideed guidance on nutrient management in horticultural crops and establishing nutrition gardens at the household level.
As part of the awareness drive, the KVK team distributed bio-fertilizer inoculants for paddy nurseries to demonstrate their benefits and encourage adoption among farmers.
The conference saw participation from Sarpanches Dharampal Singh of Tungan, Harinder Singh of Kular Khurd, Deep Singh of Kanoi, and Dhanwant Singh of Kheri, along with Panches Surjit Singh, Pala Singh, Amardeep Singh, and Satgur Singh. Progressive and young farmers including Beant Singh, Kewal Singh, Preetinder Singh, and Balwinder Singh from nearby villages also attended.
The participating sarpanches, panches, and progressive farmers appreciated KVK’s efforts and requested similar awareness camps in their villages on balanced fertilizer use in field and vegetable crops.
